    Early Life and Family

    Born in St.

    Petersburg, Russia on November 17, 1905, Mischa Auer was the son of Zoya Auer and an unknown naval officer who later died in the Russo-Japanese War. Zoya's elder brother was famed violinist and conductor Leopold Auer, but her husband abandoned her three years before Mischa's birth, marrying her younger sister.

    Immigration and Adoption

    Following the Russian Revolution, twelve-year-old Mischa and his mother fled to Constantinople in 1918.

    Zoya contracted typhus and sadly passed away, leaving Mischa orphaned. Miraculously, he found his way to Italy, where he was recognized by a former student of his grandfather. With her help
