Early Life and Career
Eduard Douwes Dekker, known by his pen name Multatuli, was born into a family of a sea captain and a housewife.
The fourth of five children, Dekker embarked on a seafaring adventure to the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) at the youthful age of 18 in 1838.
